Factors behind getting students enrolment in Boarding Schools

In the boarding schools we have observed some evolving trends which are reflecting shifts in demographics, technology, and educational priorities. The study shows the following five areas which has been instrumental in getting more admission interests:

  • Globalization:

Indian Boarding schools have always been a great attraction for international students. Over the years, with globalization the number of international students are increasing in India. The student from diversified cultural background brings a new flavor and different perspective to the school community, which enhances overall experience of all the students. All schools are offering customized programs to meet the needs of these international scholars which includes cultural orientation, academic preparation and language support. Students not only from surrounding countries but distant countries are coming to these boarding schools. Parents from more than 100 countries are sending their children to Indian Boarding Schools.

  • Inclusion in Diversity:

The boarding schools are more focused on bringing diversity and creating inclusive communities. Students from different backgrounds are getting admissions, wherever  required, schools are assisting them in getting financial aids and support. These schools are promoting a diverse student body with an inclusion of students from different cultures and backgrounds. It is bringing equity, diversity, and inclusivity among students irrespective of country of origin, race and ethnicity.

  • Technological Integration:

Technology is changing and improving every day. Boarding schools are trying their level best to incorporate these innovative technological enhancements in their regular curriculum and teaching methodology, which is making their communication easier. After Covid, it has become apparent that online platform is a must. It helps in providing uninterrupted trainings even when boarding facilities are not operational. There are several enhanced online platforms which are used for coursework, communication apps for collaboration and digital platforms for assessment. Schools are making their students future ready digitally.

Technology has become an exemplary asset for these schools which is instrumental in enhancing their teaching – learning process. Obviously, this cannot replace role of a teacher but giving them an edge over other programs due to small Student / Teacher ratio. These tools are giving access to educational resources, content and flexibility to learn at their own pace. Teachers are getting time to adjust themselves to students needs which gives them an individual touch. Teachers are able to assess every student’s need and make real time decision to pace their teaching and cater to each student.

  • Alternative Learning Models:

Alternative learning is a new way of teaching at boarding schools! Here, they continue to explore, innovate and excel with alternative learning models, such as experiential learning, blended learning, and project-based learning. These models allow for more personalized and student-centred learning experiences, helping it led to better academic outcomes and student engagement. The development of “signature programs” across many schools provides students with immersive hands-on, place-based learning experiences, preparing them for the challenges of secondary school and beyond! Signature programs may include arts programs, farm programs, outdoor experience programs, or entrepreneurship offerings.

  • Focus on Student Well-Being:

Post Covid, student and family system has become very fragile and sensitive. Boarding schools are profoundly aware of this fact and hence giving a greater emphasis to student’s well-being. They have recognized importance of emotional and social development goes hand in hand with academic achievements. Schools are focusing more on providing support for mental health, wellness and providing more resources for community building. Schools are adopting programs which are prioritizing self -care and resilience among students.

Every Boarding school in India has created at least one new faculty position specific to supporting student wellness. These teachers in Boarding schools play a critical role in providing emotional support to the students. These teachers at Boarding schools are more than academic instructors. They elevate themselves as mentors who help students to navigate through the emotional and social challenges. As a mentor, they build meaningful relationship with the students to overcome their loneliness and help them face day to day challenges of Boarding Schools, which otherwise is harder to build in regular academic setting.

Hence, we can conclude, that these approaches are making a paradigm shift in student – teacher relationship and making Boarding School a great place of learning experience for students. These strategies are enhancing Boarding School’s publicity through mouth and hence student numbers are increasing on a regular basis.
