India's Top Government Boarding Schools - Complete Admission Guide

Every parent dream of giving the best possible education to their kids, rich or poor every one on this earth want their offsprings to grow into a successful individual. They make all efforts to send them to the best school, college, and university. We all know that basic foundation should be very strong and hence the selection of a school is of utmost importance. There are many choices like Government or Private school, day-school, residential or a boarding school as well as board options like State Board, CBSE, ICSE, IB, Cambridge, etc. With all the options in mind fee budget plays a vital role in the selection of schools.

It is widely assumed fact that students coming out of boarding schools have an edge over day-scholars. They are not only getting good academics but also exposure to co-curricular and extracurricular activities. Such schools aim to develop a child into a strong individual while training them mentally, physically and socially. Living with same age-group people they learn various life traits which prepare them for future nitty-gritties.

There are several schools with very high fee structure which are affordable to a few select. But talent is not limited to riches, sharp minds can be found in rugs also. When proper grooming and right direction is provided, they may be cultivated in the best brains. To take care of such kids and to bring the best out of them, the Government of India has launched certain schemes, created facilities and given a grant to certain schools. There are several Government Boarding Schools or Residential schools where students are groomed as per the ancient tradition of Gurukuls.

If we talk about Government Day Schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas are considered the best. Similarly, in the Government Boarding Schools category, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) dominates all. The idea was conceived by the then Prime Minister Late Shri Rajeev Gandhi in the year 1984, a co-education free boarding school for the Indian public. Students are selected on the bases of entrance exams, and get the admission on the merit basis. It is for the best and brightest students from rural areas. This is a chain of more than 600+ schools across India.

It is set-up with a vision to offer the best quality modern education which includes a strong component of culture, awareness of the environment, inculcate values, physical education and adventure activities. Irrespective of the socio-economic condition of their family, it is predominantly for talented rural children from all over India.

A burning need was felt for specially talented children with a wonderful aptitude to provide opportunities in terms of quality education for their faster development. This education is to make them compete with their students from Urbanized India. JNV started at an experimental note which has transformed into the best-unparalleled education center. The success of this begins with the selection of these students through an entrance exam testing their basic skills and aptitude.

JNVs – Salient Features
  • Entrance Exam – JNVST

The first and foremost part is the selection in Navodaya Vidyalayas which is a test designed and developed by NCERT and nowadays conducted by CBSE. An all India basis test is held in all blocks and districts of India. It is an objective test designed to ensure that rural children are quiet conversant and does not face any problem while attempting. A merit list is generated based on performance through which students are selected.

  • Seat Reservation

75% of the seats are provisioned for rural children. The reservation for SC and ST is based on population proportion in the district and at par with the national average. 33% of seats are for girls and 3% are reserved for specially-abled children.

  • Free Co-Educational Residential Schools

JNVs are CBSE affiliated schools offering free education to meritorious students from Class Vi to XII. The admissions are done in Class VI and lateral entries in Class IX and XI. School provides everything for free from lodging, boarding, school uniform, stationery, textbooks, tuition fees, rail & bus fare.

  • Works on three language formula & Medium of Instruction

Navodaya Vidyalayas scheme has implemented Three Language formula, which includes – Regional Language, English, and Hindi. Upto VIII standard, the medium of instruction is kept as the regional language, their mother tongue which is changed to Hindi / English in upper classes.

  • National Integration Promotion

Inorder to inculcate the values of national integration, JNVs have implemented Migration scheme. In Class IX, students of Hindi and Non–Hindi speaking districts are exchanged. Sincere efforts are made to make them understand the Unity in Diversity philosophy and make them relish the cultural heritage of India through special activities.

It has been reported by Surveying agencies that the results of Navodaya Vidyalayas are far higher than other government institutions.

Besides this Rashtriya Military Schools and many glorified schools are there. The overall process of admission is through tests but comes in varied fees range.

Generally, people who can pay good fees opt for Private Boarding Schools who are coming nowadays ranging from 2 to 20 Lakhs. Few have a bent to educate their wards in Military schools who aim to send them in the army. But there is a different class of parent who are unable to afford the fee and other needfuls but have children with gifted mental ability, for such students Government Boarding schools like Navodaya Vidyalayas are ideal place who are producing the quality students who can give competition to an equal counterpart. So, a parent seeking admission should thoroughly check all the options, their amenities, results, etc. before admission.
