Department of English

The English Department at The Lawrence School, Lovedale, is as old as the school itself. The Department’s first major work, under the stewardship of Rev William Herbert Greenland Padfield, in April 1912, was the establishment and founding of the school’s monthly newsletter, ‘The Lawrencian,’ which it continues to publish to this day. Since then, the English Department has been deeply involved in all aspects of school life at Lovedale.

The Library

The Lawrence School library is one of the Nilgiris’ oldest and most comprehensive libraries. It serves as the primary information repository and resource for our school’s students and faculty. The library’s collection includes 27,500 books, cassettes, and multimedia CDs on a wide range of topics. Although the majority of the resources are in English, the library also has documents in French, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Sanskrit, Urdu, Punjabi, Gujarati, Telegu, Kannada, and other languages. In addition, about 50 magazines and journals, as well as five major dailies, are subscribed.

The Lawrence School, Lovedale, was certified as a Platinum IGBC Green Campus by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), an association of the prestigious Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). 

The vast expanse of the 720-acre campus is divided into three sections: the prep school, which includes classes V and VI; the junior school, which includes classes VII and VIII; and the senior school, which includes classes IX-XII. The schools’ classrooms and dormitories are located in their respective buildings. The girls live in the girls’ school and must attend classes in their respective buildings.

The senior school, also known as “the boys’ school” (even though the Senior School building also houses both boy’s and girls’ classrooms from classes IX to XII and the School’s administrative offices, in addition to the boys’ dormitories), is a magnificent two-story building with a clock tower of 130 feet, built in Italian Gothic style and designed by Architect Robert Chisholm.

The school’s infrastructure also includes a swimming pool, 400-meter athletic tracks, courts for basketball, badminton, squash, and tennis, fields for cricket, hockey, football, archery, and horseback riding, indoor cricket nets, weight-training rooms, billiards and snooker rooms, and a cross-country route. The campus also houses one of the Nilgiris’ oldest and most comprehensive libraries.

There is a kitchen and bakery, dining halls, well-equipped dormitories, transportation, laboratories, and automated laundry at the school. It also has a 50-bed infirmary with all basic healthcare facilities.
