SNIS student reaches new heights

“Mountains are earth’s undecaying monuments.” — Nathaniel Hawthorne

In this energising memoir, a young boy recounts his experience of cresting three of the seven tallest mountains in the world. It’s a story of how an idea, at the tender age of nine, turned into a dream, after months of hard work and training.

What were you doing when you were 9?

Kalkyn Ashok Thapa, a 5th grade student of SNIS (Sharanya Narayani International School, Bangalore) has been making headlines for his valour, and his parents and teachers are proud about it. The young child climbed 2 base camps and 1 summit in 1 year,

This includes three of the seven tallest mountains in the world:

  • Barafu Camp at 15,239 feet (Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa, 19,341 feet)
  • Everest base camp at 17,598 (Mount Everest, Nepal, 29,032 feet)
  • Kanchenjunga, Sikkim, 28150 feet
  •

My name is Kalkyn Ashok Thapa, I am a Grade 5 student at Sharanya Narayani International School in Bangalore. My birthday was on 27th January, and before I hit double digits, my final year as a single digit aged kid has been truly an adventure, as I have completed trekking of two base camps and one summit.

My dad promised me pizza again and we talked about our trips and memories while enjoying my favourite food. The experiences I have had before I turned 10 have been amazing and adventurous! _ Kalkyn on his achievements

“The emotional pitch of the story remains high, as Kalkyn survives extreme weather, frustration, exhaustion, and homesickness to reach his goal, with almost palpable elation.”
