The Congregation of Christian Brothers in India is the organisation in charge of the boarding school Goethals Memorial School. It is located in a forest at a height of 1674 metres (5500 feet) above sea level, 5 kilometres (3 miles) from Kurseong between Siliguri and Darjeeling. The school was established in 1907 and is named after Paul Goethals, a Jesuit archbishop of Kolkata (now Calcutta). The Maharaja of Bardhaman provided the land for the institution. Students from West Bengal, Bihar, the states of northeastern India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh attend Goethals. It offers studies from standard 1 to standard 12 and adheres to the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education curriculum.
When Paul Goethals, the Archbishop of Calcutta, passed away in July 1901, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Calcutta honoured his memory by founding a school for boys in Kurseong. Classes began in the structure built by the first principal, Br. M.S.O. Brien, in February 1907. (1907-1914). There were 110 boys living there. The official opening day was April 30, 1907.
The school’s association with the Shibpur Engineering College in Calcutta was a goal of the inaugural prospectus. The Sub Overseer Course was abandoned in favour of the Cambridge Locals since it did not meet the demands of the students. Up until the school’s conversion to the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education curriculum in the 1970s, the Cambridge Exams were still administered.
